Homestead Refund

The Homestead Refund is a rebate program for the property taxes paid by homeowners and renters. The refund is based on a portion of the property tax paid on a Kansas resident's homestead. If you own your home, the refund is a precentage of your general property tax. If you rent your home, 15% of the rent paid for occupancy is used as the property tax amount. The maximum refund is $700.

Homestead Tax returns must be filed by April 15th of each year.

  1. Kansas resident for the entire year.
  2. Income of $31,300 or less.
  3. Own or rent a home subject to Kansas property tax; and
  4. Born before January 1, 1954, or

Homestead Eligibility Form

This form is received in November by those taxpayers that qualified for a homestead tax refund the previous year.  It allows the taxpayer a “credit” to be used against the payment of their first half of real estate taxes. These tax payments are due December 20th.  The “credit” must be used by that date.  The taxpayer should bring the letter of eligibility (ELG) to the Clerk’s office for completion before paying the first half of their tax to the County Treasurer.

Tax Return Assistance

The Clerk’s Office offers the service of assisting citizens in the preparation of their Homestead Tax Returns. We also complete the Homestead Tax Credit (ELG) forms sent to qualifying taxpayers in November. These services are provided at no cost to the taxpayer.
